Microneedling What You Need to Know
If acne scarring, skin discoloration, and signs of aging are of significant concern, microneedling is an excellent solution. While several topical treatments and procedures are available, it is a cost-effective and quick treatment that yields phenomenal results. With virtually no downtime and minimal risks, it’s the perfect rejuvenating treatment for busy individuals on the go!
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a non-surgical treatment that utilizes a microneedling pen to create microscopic wounds in the skin to encourage collagen production.
Microneedling devices use small needles which create microchannels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries to the skin trigger the body to start the healing process. As the skin recovers, it tightens, and new collagen is formed.
The result is glowing skin and a visible reduction of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and improvements in overall texture and tone.
Microneedling is one of the most popular anti-aging procedures on the market because it’s cost-effective, quick, and there’s virtually no downtime after the procedure.
Why should I see a professional?
While many dermarolling devices are available for purchase for at-home treatments, we highly recommend seeing a licensed professional.
There is a big difference between the treatment that is done by a professional microneedling device and dermarollers available to the public. Professional tools create vertical punctures in the skin, whereas rollers puncture the skin at an angle and easily tear the dermis.
These microscopic tears and trauma can worsen skin texture, cause permanent scarring, and increase one’s chances of contracting a skin infection. Why risk it? It’s the opposite of your desired results!
Professional practitioners are equipped with the correct tools, proper techniques, and knowledge to guarantee beautiful and effective results.
What to expect?
Despite its intimidating name, microneedling is a quick and painless procedure. Most services are completed between 15 to 60 minutes.
Firstly, the medical practitioner will thoroughly cleanse your skin to eliminate any excess sebum, dirt, and makeup. Then, numbing cream is applied to the targeted area to eliminate pain. The practitioner will use a microneedling pen to create tiny channels in the skin in precise intervals. After the procedure is completed, the practitioner may apply a topical serum based on treatment goals.
The provider will discuss aftercare with you. However, critical aftercare suggestions to note before booking the treatment include:
- Avoid direct sun exposure for three days after the procedure
- Wear sunscreen
- Avoid wearing makeup for 12 hours
- Avoid activities that may cause you to sweat
You may experience redness, irritation, or inflammation after the treatment. These side effects should disappear within a few days.
How much does it cost?
While every office is different, costs can range on average between $200-$850 depending on the service and size of the targeted area.
Microneedling is not a quick fix! The success of the treatments is a cumulative effort. While you may see great results with one treatment, we advise three to five sessions for maximum results. It’s recommended to get the procedure done every four to five weeks.
Who can benefit from Microneedling?
Microneedling has a vast range of benefits and is suitable for all skin types.
It’s safe for darker skin tones and will not trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In addition, due to the microscopic size of the needles and its superficial puncture of the skin, it’s also suitable for sensitive skin.
It is ideal for clients who have the following skin concerns:
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Discoloration
- Uneven skin texture
- Stretch marks
- Melasma
We do not recommend this treatment for women who are pregnant. For all potential clients, we advise consulting your doctor and scheduling a consultation before booking an appointment.
What are the risks and side effects?
Like all cosmetic procedures, microneedling is not without its risks and side effects. Despite it being a minimally invasive procedure, it’s crucial to know the risks and side effects of the treatment.
The most common risks include, but are not limited to:
- Increased risk of contracting a skin infection during and shortly after the procedure
- Change in skin pigmentation
- Reaction to topical treatments used during the procedure
The most common side effects of the procedure include, but are not limited to:
- Post-procedural puncture marks
- Minor skin irritation or itchiness
- Redness
- Tightness of the skin
- Peeling or flaking of the skin
What pre-procedure precautions should I take?
Preparing your skin before the treatment is crucial to the results! To minimize skin irritation and procedure complications, we recommend all clients avoid the following five to seven days before the procedure:
- IPL or Laser procedures (2 weeks before)
- Unprotected sun exposure
- Retinols
- Aggressive acids (AHAs and BHAs)
- Hydroquinone
- Intense exfoliation
- Waxing
- Shaving – however, if dense hair is present in the treatment area, closely shave 24 hours before the procedure.
- Blood-thinning agents and medications
Do not apply sunscreen, lotion, or makeup to the targeted area the day of the procedure.
When will I see the results?
After the procedure is completed, you will notice a beautiful glow immediately! However, it will take about four hours for the tightness, swelling, and redness to disappear.
Remember, microneedling is not a quick fix! It may take about two to three treatments to see a drastic improvement. Depending on how your appointments are scheduled, this can be between 60 to 90 days. It’s also important to keep in mind that it will take time for the skin’s cells to turnover and new collagen to develop.
